Line is the fundamental building block essential to visual art. It is used
in preliminary sketches and drawings on paper, as a delineating boundary in painting and as a
gestural record of the artist's presence or motion when making work. Lines, when combined, form grids
that define 2D space and set out the framework for pictorial imagery. The 2D grid provides the structure
for Christine Parson's beaded and stitched pieces and Shirley-Ann Galbraith's works on paper
take spontaneous, linear marks as their point of origin. Moving the line into space, ultimately converting
line into 3D form lies behind the sculptural work of Philip Williams and Christine Parsons
that are constructed from linear, albeit materially unconventional, elements.
